Finca Carolina is a 23 hectare nature reserve and organic farm. The site is surrounded on one side a by a large tract of nationally protected forest (1,000 ha) and by a large (350 ha) private nature reserve on the other side of the pristine Ballena river. We grow a wide variety of tropical fruits and vegetables organically.
Volunteers learn about a wide variety of subjects including Permaculture, organic soil building methods, plant propagation, tropical fruit, plant identification, eco-tourism, medicinal plants, natural pest control, compost, and alternative energy. It is also a great opportunity to practice your Spanish with the family who live at the Finca and through participating in community projects.
Participants work 30 hours per week in exchange for housing in our screened in wooden cabins, access to a kitchen, showers, bathrooms, etc, and use of all the hiking trails. Finca Carolina does not have electricity, so bring a headlamp and leave the hair dryer behind. :) We charge $100 per week for volunteering at Finca Carolina. This includes lodging and three delicious home-cooked meals per day. We will also provide you with sheets and a towel.
Work/trade can be arranged for volunteers with extensive skills, knowledge and ability to work independently and carry out specific tasks. The fees we collect help to keep our project and dream alive and pay the local workers who work hard at keeping Finca Carolina productive and beautiful. We are also highly active in our community. Volunteers help with all aspects of our operation including farm and garden work, light construction, and running our educational tourism business.
